Equipment BMA Geneva
Which equipment is available at the Bio-molecular analysis platform in Geneva? The BMA Geneva is specialized in the characterization of proteins, protein-ligand, protein-protein, protein-RNA/DNA and RNA-ligand complexes. It is equipped with a MALS light scattering instrument and an ITC micro-calorimetry instrument. Both methods are complementary biophysical techniques to quantify and qualify protein – ligand interaction and give information on the quality and the property of a biological sample.
1) Micro-calorimenty (Iso-thermal titration calorimetry (ITC):
iTC200 Isothermal Titration Calorimetry System (Microcal www.microcal.com, GE Healthcare) is used to to quantify molecular interaction. The iTC200 instrument belongs to the newest generation of micro-calorimeters. It requires significant smaller sample size and it is characterized by higher sensitivity. The iTC200 utilizes a 200 µL cell versus the 1.4 mL cell in previous models.
2) Multi Angle Light scattering (MALS):
At the BMA Geneva we utilze a miniDAWN™ TREOS light scattering detector (Wyatt Technology, http://www.wyatt.eu/). The miniDAWN™ TREOS can be used either for continuous flow detection following (size exclusion) chromatographic separation or off-line as a stand-alone batch mode. The miniDAWN™ TREOS is connected to a ÄKTA™ purifier (GE Heathcare, http://www.gelifesciences.com). SEC is performed with a GE Healthcare Superdex column or the new Wyatt size exclusion columns, which is optimized for MALS applications.
