Discover what's happening at the UNIL
Do you ever ask yourself what’s happening at the UNIL in terms of sustainability? Without a fanfare, the institution has got many initiatives off the ground to reduce its environmental impact – and therefore yours – in order to create better social conditions for its users.
With the EPFL and vélopass, a system of self-service bikes has been put in place. It allows the holders of a Campus Card to use (free of charge for the first 3 hours) one of 70 bikes available at a number of cycle stations. The network is developing and constitutes a real alternative to individual motorized mobility.
At the initiative of cycling enthusiasts, a Bike Workshop has been set up by students to help cyclists on the campus deal with a buckled wheel, a broken chain or a flat tyre.
To discuss sustainability at midday and discover an aspect of the campus that’s still relatively unknown, Campus Plus Mid-days sessions offer the chance to attend brief and dynamic meetings organised during the lunch break. The subjects covered are very varied and there’s something for all tastes: the heating system, management of the forest, the place of the tree in English literature, micropollutants in campus rivers, etc.
Sustainability requires us to question our consumer habits. The Uniswap project proposes an exchange platform for goods and services with a complementary currency. One example of the living laboratory...
Student associations propose many activities supported by Campus Plus: a loft clearance every autumn, a weekly market for local seasonal produce, a kitchen garden, a bike exchange, etc.
To encourage the emergence of a circular economy, we need to upgrade our waste! Leftovers from our cafeterias are taken to Les Saugealles Farm which has a bio-methanization plant coupled with a cogeneration unit: enough to produce electricity for one hundred households.
Lastly, the UNIL and the EPFL have created the OUI-DD Prize which every year rewards work by students (Master’s dissertations, course work, etc) that advances our knowledge in this field.
