Monika Hegi receives the Victor Levin Award
Monika Hegi, associate professor in the Faculty of Biology and Medicine and head of the Laboratory of Tumor Biology and Genetics of the Department of Clinical Neurosciences at Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV), received the Victor Levin Award at the end of November in San Francisco at the 4th meeting of the “World Federation of Neuro-oncology”.

Mrs Utz Tremp receives an honorary doctorate from the University of Bern
The Faculty of Theology of the University of Bern has awarded an honorary doctorate to Mrs Utz Tremp, privat-docent in the Faculty of Arts of the UNIL, for her research on the history of Christianity in the Middle Ages in Bern and Fribourg and at the start of the modern era in Switzerland.

George Coukos awarded an ERC Advanced Grant
Oncologist and immunotherapy pioneer Prof. George Coukos, head of the Lausanne University Hospital - UNIL Department of Oncology and director of LICR@UNIL, sees the excellence of his work rewarded by an Advanced Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) totalling 2.5 million euros for a duration of five years.

Les Profs Dotto et Volterra, tous deux lauréats d'un ERC Advanced Grant
Gian-Paolo Dotto, professeur ordinaire au Département de biochimie de l'UNIL et Andrea Volterra, professeur ordinaire au Département des neurosciences fondamentales de l'UNIL, voient tous deux l'excellence de leurs travaux saluée par l'octroi d'un "Advanced Grant" de l'European Research Council (ERC) doté d'environ 2,5 millions d'euros chacun pour une durée de cinq ans.

Humbolt Prize for Mr Michael Esfeld
The prestigious Humbolt Prize has been awarded to the professor of philosophy Michael Esfeld. Mr Michael Esfeld studied philosophy and history at the University of Fribourg-en-Brisgau. Since 2002, he has been a full professor of epistemology and philosophy of science in the Faculty of Arts of the University of Lausanne.

The Meylan Foundation singles out Mr Alain Corbellari
Alain Corbellari, professor of medieval French literature in the Faculty of Arts, is one of the recipients of the 2013 Meylan Prize, which honours a musicologist or writer who has published a music book. He receives recognition for his last work entitled “Les Mots sous les notes” (“The Words under the Notes”) dedicated to literary musicology and musical poetics in the work of Romain Rolland.

Prof. H. Albrecher receives the 2013 Hachemeister Award
Hansjoerg Albrecher, full professor in the Department of Actuarial Science at HEC Lausanne, has received the 2013 Charles A. Hachemeister Award. This distinction was presented to him by the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) for his study entitled “A game-theoretic approach to non-life insurance markets”.

Honorary doctorate for Jean Kaempfer
Mr J. Kaempfer, professor emeritus in the Faculty of Arts, has received an honorary doctorate from the University of Clermont-Ferrand. Mr Kaempfer was trained in literary research by the famous “Geneva School” where he defended his arts doctorate (supervised by L. Dällenbach) in 1987. He spent much of his career with the UNIL and has been a visiting professor at the Universities of Geneva, Zurich and Bern, amongst others.

Dietmar Zehn wins an ERC Starting Grant
The European Research Council (ERC) has announced the names of those obtaining 2013 Starting Grants, which are awarded to talented young researchers starting their own research teams. Nearly 400 million euros were distributed to 287 brilliant researchers representing 34 nationalities. Their number included the immunologist D. Zehn of the UNIL Faculty of Biology and Medicine.

Yvan Arsenijevic receives the 2013 Alfred-Vogt Award
The 2013 Alfred-Vogt Award went to Yvan Arsenijevic, Associate Professor in the UNIL Faculty of Biology and Medicine, who runs the Stem Cell Therapy and Biology Unit at the Jules-Gonin Ophthalmic Hospital. The award recognises Prof. Arsenijevic’s work on mechanisms controlling degeneration of the retina.

Dominic Rohner, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Econometrics and Political Economy at HEC Lausanne has just received the KFW Development Bank Excellence Award for Policy Relevant Development Research. This award is presented annually to promote dialogue between scientific research and practical development work.

Dr B. Dafflon receives the 2013 Paul Niggli Medal
Baptise Dafflon completed his doctoral thesis at the former Geophysics Institute of UNIL. This medal awarded by the Swiss Mineralogy and Petrography Society recognises his original research contributions to the geophysical exploration of aquifers and permafrost environments.

At the beginning of June 2013, Bérengère Gautier was runner-up in the Aydalot Award for her thesis defended at the UNIL Institute of Geography and Sustainability entitled “The integration of cities through networks of multinational firms: case study of the Mediterranean food-processing industry".

Two international awards for Dr. François Allisson
Mr François Allisson, a doctor of economics specialising in the history of economic thought at the Faculty of Business and Economics (HEC), and a lecturer at the Walras-Pareto Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies, received the “2013 Joseph Dorfman Prize for the Best Dissertation in the History of Economics” and the “Warren J. and Sylvia J. Samuels Young Scholar Award” in the space of just 10 days.

Dr Aurélie Manuel, for her thesis entitled "Neuroplasticity of inhibitory control" defended at the CHUV on August 16th 2012, Dr Ralf Wimmer, for his thesis entitled "The role of spindles for sleep: Manipulating oscillatory activity in the thalamocortical network".

Honorary doctorate for Pierre Margot
Director of the Forensic Science Institute Professor Pierre Margot will receive an honorary doctorate this September from the University of Quebec in Trois-Rivières. Recognised internationally by his peers, Pierre Margoz received in 2011 the Douglas M. Lucas Medal, the most prestigious award in forensic science.
