The Faculty of Biology and Medicine covers three disciplines that share the same interest in living beings, while offering three complementary approaches and cultures. Biology looks at nature in all its forms and focuses its academic activity on fundamental research.
Medicine and nursing sciences (the latter at the UNIL since October 2008) for their part focus on human beings in their entirety, whether in good health or suffering physically or emotionally. Their activities are oriented towards care for the sick and clinical research.
Teaching in the disciplines of Biology, Medicine and Nursing Sciences offers many possibilities for collaboration. A new synergy will shortly emerge with close links between the Faculty and the cantonal University Hospital. Future biologists interested in human biology and the biology of diseases now have the possibility of studying these fields of medicine in greater depth as part of a Masters. Conversely, future doctors interested in fundamental research can develop their knowledge of the fundamental disciplines of biology by taking a doctorate in Medicine and Sciences. Lastly, nursing professionals have the possibility of consolidating their training in their discipline and becoming healthcare experts.
The Doctoral School is responsible for doctoral studies, a field in which biologists and doctors have collaborated closely for many years. Many doctoral theses in Life Sciences are completed in medical research laboratories. For its part, fundamental medical research benefits from the skills and medical platforms developed by fundamental biology. These synergies now extend to nursing sciences, since the UNIL has become the second university in the French-speaking world to offer a doctorate in Nursing Sciences.
