Then, in 2005, he moved to France to start his PhD working with archaea in the BMGE lab at the Institut Pasteur and the Université Paris-Sud XI, campus Orsay. He worked with Patrick Forterre, Simonetta Gribaldo and Marie-Claude Serre to develop two projects: The first one focused on the evolution of integrative elements in archaeal genomes, and the second project established the presence of a Xer/dif system in archaea, using Pyrococcus abyssi as a model. Diego joined the lab as a postdoctoral fellow in April 2010.

IrisFinci_100px.jpg

Iris Finci - PhD Student

Iris Finci obtained her Master's degree in Molecular biology from the International Max Planck Research School at the University of Göttingen (Germany) in 2010. Afterwards, she did a 6 months internship in the group of Dr. Khaitovich at the PICB (Shanghai, China) working on the establishment of a protocol for polysome isolation. She joined the group as a PhD student in August 2011.

Franzi_Photo_100px.jpg

Franziska Gruhl - PhD Student

Franziska obtained her Masters degree in Molecular Biosciences in 2013 at the University of Heidelberg (Germany). She carried out her thesis in the lab of Jochen Wittbrodt where she analyzed the intestinal stem cell niche of the teleost fish Medaka (Oryzias latipes). From 2009-2011, she worked as a research associate in the lab of Laurence Ettwiller (COS Heidelberg) on the identification and in-vivo validation of cis-regulatory elements (enhancer). Franziska did two long-term internships with Detlev Arendt (EMBL Heidelberg) and Marcel Dinger (UQDI Brisbane, Australia) looking at the nervous system development of Platynereis dumerilii and lncRNAs in cell differentiation. She joined the lab as a PhD student in August 2013.

Katja_pic.png

Katerina Guschanski - Postdoctoral Fellow

Katja obtained her PhD in 2009 at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology working in the group of Linda Vigilant on population genetics of wild mountain gorillas. She then worked as a postdoc at the Imperial College London looking at the factors affecting speciation in a group of African primates, the guenons. Katja joined the lab as a postdoctoral fellow in December 2010. Katja was awarded EMBO, Marie Curie and HFSP longterm postdoctoral fellowships in 2011.

Jean_Halbert_100px.jpg

Jean Halbert - Technician

Jean obtained his Master’s degree in Biology, Genetics and Immunology of Parasitic Infections at the University of Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris VI) in 2004. He then moved to the University of Glasgow (UK) to work as a research assistant and lab manager in the group of Prof. Christian Doerig, which relocated to the EPFL (Lausanne) in 2009. His work mainly focused on the reverse genetics analyses of the protein kinases of the human parasite Plasmodium falciparum. After 7 years of fruitful collaboration and two short contracts at the EPFL in the groups of Prof. Brisken and Prof. Lingner, Jean joined the Kaessmann group in February 2013.
