Anxiety disorders

A receptor ("5-HT1A") to the neurotransmitter serotonin is known to be implicated in anxiety, and anxiety behavior is manifested in transgenic mice that express this receptor unusually early. DNF researchers have studied the CA1 region of the hippocampus in these animals and have shown a specific alteration of the intrahippocampal pathway correlating with the appearance of the anxious behaviour. They are currently analyzing the underlying cellular mechanisms using several in vitro models (dissociated cultures, organotypic cultures) - see Hornung.
