Peripheral nerve injury
Damaged peripheral nerves have the capacity to regenerate, but the functional recovery is generally incomplete, and much needs to be learned about how to optimize this healing process. DNF researchers have shown that thyroid hormones, in particular triiodothyronine (T3), improve and accelerate nerve regeneration. To open the way for future clinical application of T3 in human peripheral nerve lesion and neuropathies, they are now testing the local administration of T3 at the level of transected nerve by using biodegradable tubes. They are also clarifying the cellular mechanisms underlying this potential therapeutic tool - see Walter-Barakat.
