Introduction to arbuscular mycorrhiza
The arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis is the most widespread plant-fungal interaction between roots of terrestrial plants and fungi of the Glomeromycota. Studying the association is exciting and important because of the nutritional benefit it confers to host plants, its ubiquitous occurrence among extant plants, its influence on plant diversity in natural ecosystems and its possible ancestral relationship to other plant interactions.
Our research
Our research aims at elucidating molecular mechanisms underlying the AM symbiosis in maize and rice. Both plant systems offer exceptional resources for studies in molecular genetics and at the same time represent the economically most important crop plants.
Results from our efforts may have a direct impact on plant nutrition and pest management strategies important for the optimization of agricultural systems.
