Research theme: Ecology and Evolution of Staphylococci
The main subject of my research is the Staphylococcal Cassette Chromosome mec (SCCmec), a genomic island that confers resistance to b-lactam antibiotics to staphylococci.
I am mainly interested in the fitness cost associated with the presence of SCCmec in MRSA (methicillin resistant S. aureus) and in the molecular mechanisms involved in the horizontal transfer of this genomic island, focusing on the excision and the integration in the host's chromosome.
