The Master of Science in Molecular Life Sciences aims to prepare students for interdisciplinary work, which has become essential in biological research nowadays. The instruction is focused on the acquisition of a sound basis in cell and molecular biology, genomics, and bioinformatics. Recent breakthroughs in the field of genomics have opened up new research perspectives that enable us to greatly advance our knowledge in the physiological functions of living organisms, from bacteria to humans.
The University of Lausanne offers a scientific environment, rich in multidisciplinary interactions with partners like the University of Geneva (UNIGE), the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale of Lausanne (EPFL) and the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois (CHUV) to take advantage of these developments. The research groups of these different institutions solidify their collaboration by actively participating in joint centres of excellence. These collaborations have permitted from 2011 to propose two distinctions to the MLS students : the first one in bioinformatics (with SIB Swiss Insitute for Bioinformatics and University of Geneva) and the second one in microbiology (with the Insitute of Microbiology of the CHUV) . The MLS students may also follow a more general track to obtain a distinction in integrative biology.
Furthermore, the technical platforms available at the University of Lausanne (for example: genomics, proteomics and imaging) are valuable resources for an outstanding teaching and research programme. The Master of Science in Molecular Life Sciences is designed for students who are inquisitive, motivated and extremely keen to explore life processes, using the most modern methods of experimental biology. The teaching of the Master focuses on the acquisition of both specialised and transferable skills in this field especially with the two personal research projects : the first-step and the master thesis
