Introduction to Field Animal Experimentation - Practical Module 1
23 - 25 March, Lausanne
Organisers
Alexandre Roulin, Nicolas Perrin, Philippe Christe, Luca Fumagalli, Claus Wedekind
Summary
The course will provide the necessary empirical and theoretical knowledge to carry out experiments with wild vertebrates. This course will be recognized by cantonal veterinary services provided that participants also follow another course on legislation. During our course we will consider birds (ethics, legislation, most frequent experiments, capture techniques, handling, biometry, blood sampling, injection, implantation, radiotracking, marking, neck collars), mammals (capture techniques, handling, biometry, blood sampling, radio tracking, marking), reptiles and amphibians (legislation and status, capture, handling, marking, blood sampling, rearing), fish (ethics, legislation, most frequent experiments, capture techniques, maintenance in captivity, anaesthetization, handling, biometry, tissue and blood sampling, radio tracking and marking, standard ecotoxicology tests and alternatives), and non-invasive genetic methods (molecular analyses and genetic markers, principles and limitations of non-invasive genetic methods, and examples applied to conservation biology and wildlife forensics).
General information
Participants who carry out or supervise animal experiments must follow the Introductory Field Animal Experimentation course given between 23 and 25 March 2009 (module 1). This course is recognized by the veterinary service as 20 hours experiments with wild animals (birds, mammals, fish, reptiles and amphibians). It corresponds to the practical part of the module 1 given for laboratory animals (course which is given for instance at the CHUV hospital in Lausanne, see the certificate from the veterinary service and the resal website). Therefore, participants who attend our course do not need to follow the course on laboratory animals. Nevertheless, supervisors also must attend a second theoretical course (module 2) on legislation. This theoretical course is organised by the Lemanic Animal Facility Network RESAL and will take place in June 2009 in Lausanne or September 2009 in Geneva
Other information on the different Modules 2 can be found at : More information
After supervisors have followed the two modules 1 (pratical part) and 2 (theoretical part) they must complete four days of additional training every four years in the field of animal experimentation relative to their field of research. This course is also acknowledged as 2,5 days of continuing education by the suisse veterinary service. You can find information at the following two websites: Courses and Education
Note that the veterinary service recognizes congresses as continuing education: 3 x 1h of congress is equivalent to 1/2 day of continuing education.
PhD and master students, postdocs and academics can attend the course.
Participants outside the University of Lausanne/Department of Ecology and Evolution must pay a fee before the course starts:
- Postdocs and academics: 500 CHF
- PhD: 400 CHF
- Master students: 300 CHF
