Powerful Posters
18 March 2010, Lausanne
Trainer
Dr. Pamela Alean-Kirkpatrick, alean-academics, Eglisau
Summary
Presenting research work in poster form is common in a research context, especially at conferences. Many of these posters are, however, often not read – and the work is therefore not discussed – because they are presented in an unattractive way, they are difficult to read quickly and they do not invite discussion. This short course aims to make you aware of how to produce an attractive poster that makes your research work visible and interesting for the audience, and that invites discussion – the main objective of a poster presentation.
Objectives
At the end of the course the participants should be able to
• describe the advantages and disadvantages of poster presentations
• identify the elements that make a poster attract attention
• structure their poster in a way that highlights the main message
• plan a short oral presentation of the poster
• avoid the common mistakes associated with the preparation and presentation of posters
Methods
Short theoretical inputs, small group exercises and discussion
Preparation
Participants are asked to please bring a poster (A1 or A0 size) to the course (their own or one from a colleague). We will not be judging the posters individually but using them to identify essential elements of “powerful posters”.
