Master of Science in Nursing Sciences

The University of Lausanne (UNIL) and the University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland (HES-SO) are offering a joint Master of Science in Nursing Sciences.

Placed under the aegis of the University Institute of Training and Research in Patient Care (IUFRS), this programme is intended to train future graduates as specialist nursing clinical practitioners, to optimise the quality of treatment and the safety of patients and guarantee the efficient use of resources. They will be the first choice as partners for interdisciplinary work in patient care and health promotion.

The MScSI teaches skills grouped in the following four areas: Foundations of the discipline of nursing and advanced nursing practice; Practice in providing direct specialised clinical care for patients, their families and their relatives in complex care situations; Consulting, coaching, guidance and leadership; Research and handling of scientific evidence.

These skills will enable these new health professionals to play a pivotal role in health-care organisations, ensuring the ongoing renewal of nursing practices. They will contribute to organisational changes and any necessary developments in the health system.

University studies develop, in addition to specific academic skills, a great many transverse skills such as: oral and written communication, critical, analytical and summarising faculties, abilities in research, the learning and transmission of knowledge, independence and the ability to make judgements in the field of specialisation and overlapping areas.

This panoply of skills, combined with specialist knowledge acquired in the course of stud- ies, is excellent preparation for a wide range of employment opportunities such as:

  • Public or private health institutions (hospitals, medical care establishments, home care, etc.)
  • Organisations within the health system
  • Teaching of Nursing Sciences/Nursing Care
  • Academic research
