Foreign nationals who take up residence in Switzerland must register with the Aliens' Office or the Population Control Service of their new municipality of residence. They are required to file an application for authorisation of their stay within eight days of their arrival in Switzerland. The documents necessary for obtaining a residence permit are:
- valid passport
- visa, if required
- 2 photos, passport size
- guarantee that you have sufficient financial means to cover the expenses of your stay
- copy of the invitation letter sent to you by the UNIL
- marriage certificate, if married
How to proceed
A residence permit is essential for entering and leaving Swiss territory. It is strongly recommended that you carry this document on your person.
In many cases, forms from municipal offices are available in the French language only. If you do not feel comfortable with this language, it is advisable for you to be accompanied by a person who can help you with translation.
