Status Recognition

To become a full member of the university community and to benefit from the infrastructures available at UNIL, you must obtain recognition of your status as belonging to one of the following groups:

Academic or Technical Personnel

If you would like to join the academic or technical staff of UNIL, you should consult the vacant positions section and follow the specific procedure indicated for each position.

Doctoral Students

Prerequisite :

Students wishing to continue their studies to obtain a doctorate must be judged formally eligible by the Admissions Department.

Status Recognition Conditions :

Candidates must have a university qualification deemed equivalent by the Rectorate to the UNIL diploma required for admission to the doctoral programme. In addition, they must be formally eligible for the doctoral programme within their previous university (or, where relevant, another university located in the same country and recognised by UNIL). They must also obtain the agreement of a professor to act as thesis supervisor and obtain Faculty approval regarding the equivalence of their university degree.

Guest Researcher

Prerequisite :

A researcher invited by a professor of the University of Lausanne (UNIL) whose candidature has been approved by the Deanship of the Faculty concerned, provided that the person in question has been awarded a grant by an official body of his/her country of origin or can count on other external financing, may obtain the status of guest researcher. This status is reserved to persons who are not registered at UNIL and are not employees of UNIL.

Status Recognition Conditions :

Candidates must have a Master's degree recognised by UNIL (or a university qualification deemed equivalent) and they must pursue research activities coming within the scope of competence of the inviting teaching or research unit (Cumulative Conditions).

Duration :

The status of guest researcher is recognised for a maximum period of one year, which is renewable once only.

Benefits :

The status of guest researcher allows :

- Access to the university libraries and the Cantonal and University Library (BCU)

- Access to the UNIL computer network

- Use of UNIL software and multimedia resources

- Where relevant, access to laboratories, as defined beforehand by the inviting professor

- Access to the Language Centre

- Access to the activities of the UNIL sports centre

- Access to university restaurants

- Access to the premises indicated on his/her Campus Card

Status Recognition Procedures :

The inviting professor forwards the candidate's application to the Deanship of the Faculty concerned. If the Deanship approves, the inviting professor :

- Sends a letter of invitation to the candidate

- Forwards the application to the Human Resources Department for registration in the administrative applications as a guest researcher.

Insurance and Residence Permit :

The Deanship of the Faculty must verify with the Head of the unit to which the guest researcher is attached that the researcher's health and accident insurance cover is recognised in Switzerland and that the person concerned has a valid residence permit.

External Scientific Collaborator

Prerequisite :

Persons who, while not (or no longer) being a member of the university community, pursue research activities with external funding and wish to benefit from certain advantages concerning essentially the use of existing infrastructures may enjoy the status of external scientific collaborator.

Status Recognition Conditions :

The status of external scientific collaborator may be recognised at the following cumulative conditions:

- The person concerned holds a doctorate recognised by UNIL

- He/she is engaged in research activities that are recognised by the Head of a UNIL teaching or research unit and, as a general rule, come within the scope of competence of that unit.

Duration :

The status of external scientific collaborator is recognised for a renewable period of three months to two years.

Benefits :

The status of external scientific collaborator allows :

- Access to the university libraries

- Access to the UNIL computer network

- Access to the Language Centre

- Access to the activities of the UNIL sports centre

- Access to university restaurants

- Access to the premises indicated on his/her Campus Card

Status Recognition Procedures :

The Dean of the Faculty concerned may propose the status of external scientific collaborator to the Rectorate, after consulting the Head of the unit concerned, who takes on overall responsibility for the person as far as his/her activities in relation to the University are concerned.

For this purpose, a specific application must be made by the Dean to the Human Resources Department (See Useful Documents).

Insurance and Residence Permit :

The Deanship of the Faculty concerned must verify with the Head of the unit to which the scientific collaborator is attached that the health and accident insurance cover of the person concerned is recognised in Switzerland and that he/she has a valid residence permit.
