In brief...
Since 1964, a Swiss archaeological mission, which became in 1975 the Swiss School of Archaeology in Greece (ESAG), has been excavating the remains of the ancient site of Eretria in Euboea, a medium sized city which has extensively contributed to the development and the influence of the Greek civilisation.
Eretria's rich past has been enlightened by several excavations made by the School: the Bronze age settlement, important remains of the Geometric and Archaic periods, rich houses dating from the Classical-Hellenistic period, Roman workshops and a Sebasteion, as well as Palaeochristian burials.
