Doctoral process

Steps towards a Doctorate in Public Administration with reference to the Regulations for obtaining a Doctorate in Public Administration from the Faculty of Law, Criminal Science and Public Administration of the University of Lausanne :

  • Ensure that you are formally eligible for the doctoral programme (in accordance with the Directives of the Rectorate of the University of Lausanne) Art. 5, al. 1
  • Find a thesis supervisor Art. 7
  • Write a three-page thesis project proposal and complete the “registration form for a PhD in Public Administration from the University of Lausanne” Art. 8
  • Submit your thesis project proposal and a training plan to IDHEAP’s Research Committee (which gives its initial opinion and sends it to the Dean’s Office for approval) Art. 6
  • Register as PhD student at UNIL Art. 5 al. 2
  • Follow the Doctoral training plan in Public Administration or an equivalent approved by IDHEAP Art. 11
  • Present your thesis progress report at a preliminary thesis colloquium (at the latest 2 years after the approval of the thesis project) Art. 14
  • Ensure (annual) follow-up for your thesis within the research seminar framework Art.15
  • Collect the thesis jury’s report (no later than 2 months after delivery of the manuscript), defend your thesis during a private thesis colloquium (no later than 4 months after delivery of the manuscript) Art.16
  • Defend your thesis publicly (at least 3 weeks after the jury’s written report) Art.18
  • On reception of the imprimatur, print your thesis, Art. 19 and receive the title of Doctor in Public Administration of the University of Lausanne, Art.20
