Research
Germán Rubino graduated as a Geophysicist (2004) and obtained a Ph.D. (2008) in Geophysics from the Universidad Nacional de la Plata, Argentina. Later, he spent one year as a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Applied Geophysics of the Universidad Nacional de La Plata before he joined the Institute of Geophysics at the University of Lausanne in May 2010.
His Ph.D. thesis covered several topics in the field of theoretical and computational rock physics. The main motivations and contributions of this work were related to the analysis of the influence of different kinds of spatial rock and fluid heterogeneities on the propagation of elastic waves in fluid-saturated porous rocks. Additionally, being a Ph.D. student and later a Postdoctoral researcher, he was involved in the development of new methods to fully determine the elastic parameters of thin beds using prestack seismic data, as well as in the seismic characterization of CO2-bearing geological formations.
Currently, his main research interests are associated to the analysis of seismic wave propagation in highly heterogeneous porous media, in the presence of inhomogeneities larger than the pore size but smaller than the predominant wavelengths (“mesoscopic-scale” heterogeneities), and the potential applications of these results in diverse geological environments to extract additional information from the seismic data.
