Cartography & visualization

Traditionally cartography means of recording and representing spatial data. The technical development of the last decades allowed for integration of cartography with data visualization and communication of spatial phenomena. Cartography also became interactive and dynamic. In combination with powerful analysis algorithms, visualization of spatial and space-time data evolved into a tool for data-mining allowing the development of hypothesis and decision support. In particular, analysis and representation of the graphs are of particular interest in the research fields of urban geography and regional science.

Research undertaken at the IGD in the field of cartography and visualization are focused especially on interactive and dynamic cartography, visualization on mobile devices, the integration of analysis methods with visualization tools for interactive data exploration, the visualization on several spatial and analytical scales, the representation of graphs particularly in the fields of urban geography and regional science, and also of the specialized cartography applied to specific fields, such as for example the geomorphological cartography.

Modelling and simulation of self-organized complex systems

This research orientation is focused on the study of socio-economic or environmental systems, the development of models, the simulation of complex systems as well as the development of new algorithms and their validation.

Among the fields studied within the IGD, network analysis receives a special attention going from visualization of networks and flows to the analysis of their statistical properties. In order to better understand the passage from individual strategies to processes, multilevel models are studied.

Research undertaken at the IGD also relates to the development of computational methods, with the development of analysis algorithms, the processing of data streams and non-structured data and the development of parallel and distributed computation methods.

Data analysis

The heritage of the “quantitative revolution” in geography during the 1960-70s, such as the concepts of spatial interaction and spatial autocorrelation, of the gravity model for flows, of centrality and accessibility, etc. continues to be investigated in the field of spatial analysis. The issues opened by these paradigms require further development, exploration and a more rigorous formalism or a fruitful confrontation with other disciplines, in particular mathematical statistics, operational research, graph theory and non-linear extensions of machine learning.

At the IGD, analysis and modelling of balanced or fuzzy formalisms (soft clustering) is given a special attention, with the analysis and the visualization of flows, the characterization of the dissimilarities used in geography, the local formalisms in spatial autocorrelation and concentration, and with the associated multivariate factorial methods.
