In 2008, the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation launched several Bilateral Programmes to Promote Research Cooperation with Priority Countries. Each programme is managed by a Swiss university acting as "Leading House", with in some cases another university as "Associate Leading House".
Until end 2016, the Swiss side of the bilateral programme with India was managed by EPFL as Leading House, and UNIL as Associate Leading House:
- EPLF was in charge of the Indo-Swiss Joint Research Programme (ISJRP) concerning Science and Technology;
- UNIL was in charge of the Indo-Swiss Joint Research Programme in the Social Sciences (see below).
As from 2017, the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) is in charge of the bilateral programme with India. The contact person is Mr Waseem Hussain, Head India Desk:

Indo-Swiss Joint Research Programme in the Social Sciences
In 2008, 2009, and 2010 UNIL as Associate Leading House has launched unilateral calls of proposals for research projects with India.
In 2012, UNIL (as Associate Leading House) and the Indian Council for Social Science Research (ICSSR) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding and launched the Indo-Swiss Joint Research Programme in the Social Sciences.
The activities set forth in the programme are designed to encourage the dialogue between Swiss and Indian scholars in social sciences. They include among others the launch of bilateral calls for joint research projects, the organisation of workshops, and visits of scholars.
- The fourth Indo-Swiss Seminar will take place in Basel, Switzerland, from 4-6 September 2017
