Analysis of the criteria for assessing the quality of qualitative research in the field of
health sciences at an international level
A review of international literature in the fields of social and human sciences, medicine and ethics as well as psychology shows a significant increase in studies and publications of a qualitative nature. Associated with these studies are a number of English-language guidelines presenting criteria for the evaluation of the quality of these studies. However, these attempts remain monodisciplinary, little known and their suggestions relatively scattered. It seems that the quality criteria of qualitative research and publications raise major issues, which are not only methodological, but above all epistemological and theoretical. The persistence of the debate on the validity of qualitative studies as well as the “patchwork” nature of the existing models underlines a need to develop appropriate directives for researchers and experts in the health sciences (members of clinical research ethics committees and funding organisations, peer reviewers, producers of qualitative research, etc.). Such an interdisciplinary project will provide the biomedical sciences and the social and human sciences in health with a space for fruitful dialogue and exchange to develop, and enable them to overcome the lack of consensus linked to the absence of recognized collaborative tools. We propose, in an initial phase, to make an inventory of the existing models in the fields of health sciences (medicine, human and social sciences in health, nursing, etc.), and to perform a comparative and reasoned analysis of these models. We will place the models into their theoretico-epistemological context by comparison with two of their author’s journal articles.
