Land Use Policies
The activities of the institute are specialized in the analysis and the assessment of public policies, related to the management of natural resources and urban organization. To be able to compare it from an international viewpoint an excellent knowledge of sustainable development and of the swiss institutions are necessary.
Human environment
The approach aims at the links between human being and its physical and social environment.
The research is specialized in the analysis of interferences of human activities on natural ecosystems, these effects and the regulation of these ecosystems. The study of methods of the industrial ecology is also part of the degree courses. Both approaches concentrate on all types of vulnerability and imbalance in a sustainable and social perspective.

L'IPTEH est constitué de trois axes de recherche:
- L'axe "Politiques territoriales" dirigé par le Prof. Jean Ruegg
- L'axe "Ecologie industrielle" dirigé par le Prof. Suren Erkman
- L'axe "Fondements et mise en oeuvre de la durabilité" dirigé par le Prof. Dominique Bourg
