Research area
Leah Tillemans has a master degree in geography in the area of urban studies from the University of Lausanne, Switzerland. An important part of her studies was devoted to the concept of urban sustainability, and in particular to methods for evaluating sustainability and for integrating measures at a planning level. This led her to realize the importance of land management in the success of urban planning strategies. After graduating in august 2009, she began a PhD at the Institute of Land Use Policies and Human Environment, University of Lausanne in the group concerned with land use policies under the supervision of J. Ruegg (University of Lausanne) and R. Prélaz-Droux (University of applied sciences HEIG-VD).
Her current research addresses the legal and financial issues of land management with respect to the implementation of planning goals. Focus is on the relations between private (landowners, developers, investors) and public stakeholders responsible for urban development. Topics of interest are for example the way in which planning gain is dealt with and negotiated, or the impact of different land management regimes on the conduct of urban development projects. One of the goals is to explicit the le role of more « relational » variables (information, type of organization, actor-network relationships, etc). These issues are developed as part of her PhD research, as well as under the framework of the COST action TU602 Land management for urban dynamics.
