Hans-Georg von Arburg lehrt seit 2009 als Professor für Neuere deutsche Literatur an der Universität Lausanne.
Sergej Rickenbacher verfasst seit 2009 an eine Dissertation zur Ästhetik der Stimmung im Werk Robert Musils und ist zurzeit Mitarbeiter im SNFProjekt »Stimmung. Geschichte und Kritik ästhetischer Empfindung zwischen Literatur, Musik und Kunst in der Moderne« an der Universität Lausanne.

Registre des faibles est un livre compact, cohérent et dérangeant: ses deux aspects si antithétiques, à savoir la radiographie quasi imperturbable, quasi scientifique d'une réalité, et en même temps l'engagement presque compassionnel, presque compatissant, de cette même réalité transformée en bref fragment rythmique, cohabitent dans ces textes, blessent et caressent à la fois. La blessure n'est pas celle, injurieuse, de la simple condamnation indignée; la caresse n'est pas celle, mielleuse, d'une absolution trop facile et indolore. Lucidité et compassion se tempèrent et se stimulent mutuellement; le lecteur en absorbe la voix et, plus précisément, le chant. Mais c'est une voix qui incise, un chant qui interroge: une voix et un chant que Fabiano Alborghetti est allé chercher dans des endroits dangereux et effroyables, en risquant encore une fois de se perdre. The literary motif of the "allegorical knightly quest" appears repeatedly in the literature of the late medieval/early modern period, notably in Spenser, but has hitherto been little examined. Here, in his examination of a number of sixteenth-century English allegorical-chivalric quest narratives, focussing on Spenser's Faerie Queene but including important, lesser-known works such as Stephen Bateman's Travayled Pylgrime and William Goodyear's Voyage of the Wandering Knight, the author argues that the tradition begins with the French writer Guillaume de Deguileville. His seminal Pèlerinage de la vie humaine was composed c.1331-1355; it was widely adapted, translated, rewritten and printed over the next centuries. Dr Nievergelt goes on to demonstrate how this essentially "medieval" literary form could be adapted to articulate reflections on changing patterns of identity, society and religion during the early modern period; and how it becomes a vehicle of self-exploration and self-fashioning during a period of profound cultural crisis.

Auf der Basis einer neuen Sichtung der italienischen, lateinischen und deutschsprachigen Überlieferung in Handschrift und Druck hat diese Studie zum Ziel, die Frühphase der Boccaccio-Rezeption im deutschsprachigen Raum neu zu schreiben. Zwei Phasen zeichnen sich ab: Einer ersten, humanistischen, die in den 1460er Jahren einsetzt und über lateinische Zwischenstufen verläuft, folgt eine zweite, populäre, in der die Novellen in der Mehrheit aus Kompilationen gezogen sind. Die Publikation des um 1476/77 ins Deutsche übertragenen Dekameron situiert sich dazwischen. Ältere und neuere Fragestellungen um die Diffusion der Novellen und den Kulturtransfer zwischen Italien und Deutschland, um Figuren wie Niklas von Wyle, Arigo, Albrecht von Eyb und seine Paveser Universitätskommilitonen sowie Georg Wickram werden hier aufgegriffen und neu beantwortet. Die Analyse der Novellen, die vereinzelt gedruckt wurden, dabei bleibt die in der Forschung am meisten untersuchte “Griseldis” im Hintergrund, während sich “Guiscard und Sigismunde” als der rote Faden durch mehrere Kapitel zieht – schließt mit der anonymen Übersetzung der “Francisca”-Novelle (Dekameron IX,1), einem Neufund, ab. Band zwei bietet, neben einem umfassenden Katalog der handschriftlichen und gedruckten Novellen, ihre philologisch-kritische Textedition neben einer Neuausgabe von Wyles Übertragung von Dekameron IV,1 sowie der “Cymon”-Novelle von Johann Haselberg (1516).

What happens when we re-read a familiar book? Does the second encounter turn us into experts, more knowing and confident in our relation to the text? Or conversely, does it expose the gaps and limits of each reading experience? Does re-reading affirm our own sense of identity, reconnecting us to earlier memories, or does it shock and destabilize, revealing discontinuities between past and present selves? Is re-reading uncanny, a discovery of the familiar in the unfamiliar, or the reverse? Do certain literary devices and tropes – symbols, allegories, for example, depend on re-reading to be activated? Are there some texts that can only be re-read? Re-reading is rarely discussed in depth yet it forms the core of most conversations about literature, for we rarely become passionate or critical about books we have only read once. It is also re-reading that consolidates a core of texts into what we recognise to be a canon of literature, and it is re-reading, again, that breaks open the canon and reshapes it. We re-read alone, but we also re-read communally, in the shared space of the theatre, or in the translation of a text from one culture to another, or one medium to another. Re-reading is a necessary part of the professional reader’s life yet there is often, in the history of the individual scholar, some formative relationship with a text read obsessively in childhood.

This bilingual volume of essays brings together an international group of eminent scholars in order to reflect on this process of re-reading, in honour of Graham Falconer, Professor of 19th century French literature, and long-term re-reader. The essays vary from personal reflections on formative childhood reading, and self-reflexive scholarly re-readings, to analysis of the theme of re-reading in texts, and presentation of new theories of re-reading. The period from 1200 to 1600 was the golden age of fools. From representations of irreverent acts to full-blown insanity, fools appeared on the misericords of gothic churches and in the plots of Arthurian narratives, before achieving a wider prominence in literature and iconography in the decades around 1500. But how are we to read these figures appropriately? Is it possible to reconstruct the fascination that fools exerted on the medieval and early modern mind? While modern theories give us the analytical tools to explore this subject, we are faced with the paradox that by striving to understand fools and foolishness we no longer accept their ways but impose rational categories on them. Together these essays propose one way out of this dilemma. Instead of attempting to define the fool or trying to find the common denominator behind his many masks, this volume focuses on the qualities, acts, and gestures that signify foolishness. By investigating different manifestations of foolery rather than the figure of the fool himself, we can begin to understand the proliferation of fools and foolish behaviour in the texts and illustrations of manuscripts and early books.

Die Studie untersucht die Melusine des Thüring von Ringoltingen auf der Grundlage eines ausgewählten Überlieferungszeugen, des Basler Erstdruckes von Bernhard Richel 1473/74. Erforscht werden der Textaufbau und die damit verbundene Rolle des Er zählers sowie Aspekte des Stils, insbesondere die erzählungsimmanenten Dialoge des Romans. Unter dem Vorzeichen der Materialität und der Medialität wird schliesslich das Verhältnis von Text und Bild im Erstdruck analysiert. Die Arbeit ist in der Nachfolge der Untersuchungen Hans-Gert Roloffs zu sehen, wobei seit den Stilstudien rund vierzig Jahre Forschungsgeschichte ver strichen sind. Ziel ist es, an die Überlegungen Roloffs anzuknüpfen, diese kritisch zu lesen und um neue Perspektiven, die über den unmittel baren Vergleich zwischen Thürings Melusine und seiner französischen Vorlage, der Mélusine Coudrettes hinausgehen, zu erweitern.
