At the BA level, students of certain disciplines may choose to incorporate comparative literature courses into their main study plan, and students of all disciplines of the Faculty of Letters can validate courses in comparative literature as part of an interdisciplinary ‘options’ programme (programme à options). There they form a module that is independent from “internal” and “offered” modules, which are attached to a particular discipline, and are therefore free of any specific disciplinary constraint. This module is usually composed of the introductory course, often co-taught in French and English, and a seminar in comparative analysis of literary texts (bilingual seminars are normally offered every year).

At the MA level, the interdisciplinary curriculum in Comparative European Literatures and Languages (LLEUC) offers courses and seminars that are closely related to the research areas developed by the CLE. Some of these courses also share a common theme developed over two (or more) years, depending on the teachers, languages and disciplines involved. Through the dynamic interaction between research and teaching and the coherence of the programme, students build advanced interdisciplinary competences and can prepare an MA mémoire (MA thesis) in Comparative European languages and Literatures (LLEUC) in a stimulating environment and vibrant intellectual community.  It also allows them to plan (and prepare for) an MA de spécialisation (MAsp) or a 30 ECTS complément d’études.
Participants in advanced seminars are expected to follow (or to have followed) the team-taught, bilingual introductory course (“Introduction à l’étude comparative des littératures européennes”). Advanced students and those preparing a mémoire (MA thesis) or a doctoral thesis in LLEUC (PhD thesis in comparative literature) are encouraged to participate in the MA seminar “Epistémologie et pratique d’une comparaison différentielle”.

Students can follow courses in LLEUC at the MA level as part of their “programme à options” (options programme) or as part of the study plan of some disciplinary MA programmes (Modern French, English, Italian, classical studies).



The CLE offers an MA interdisciplinary specialisation programme which enables students to bring together the languages and cultures that they may have studied separately at the BA and MA level and explore their interactions. By combining a European and a comparative perspective, they can deepen and further previously acquired knowledge and competences.
Three modules form the epistemological and interdisciplinary basis of the specialisation programme: ‘Méthodes de la comparaison’, ‘Langues et littératures en dialogue’ and ‘Perspectives européennes’. The programme allows students to opt for a research-oriented project (preparation of a doctoral project, academic conferences, publications) and/or to accomplish a first professional experience (internships).

COMPLEMENT D'ETUDES INTERDISCIPLINAIRE (additional interdisciplinary study certificate)

Graduates of a Swiss “licence”, a 90 credits MA diploma or an equivalent title from a foreign university may follow the specialisation programme and obtain an additional interdisciplinary study certificate. It earns an attestation worth 30 ECTS mentioning the specialisation in Comparative European Literatures and Languages.



The CLE offers doctoral students intensive supervision through their participation in the doctoral school “Ecole doctorale en Etudes européennes” organised in conjunction with the European Institute of the University of Geneva (Institut Européen de Genève-IEUG). The CLE also collaborates closely with the Formation Doctorale Interdisciplinaire (FDI) of the Faculty of Letters at UNIL and organises conferences regularly to stimulate doctoral students, build their academic network and give visibility to their research.
The Centre has also established a number of international conventions with European (and non-European) universities in order to foster exchanges and collaborations at the pre-doctoral, doctoral and post-doctoral levels.
