Programme description

The MD-PhD programme is designed for medical students and medical graduates from Swiss or foreign universities interested in science and in combining the study of mechanisms of disease with clinical practice in an academic setting.

The MD-PhD Commission selects interested candidates (see admission process) based on their commitment to in-depth training in research and their engagement in an innovative and competitive research project.

The programme includes a series of preparatory requirements, fulfillment of which is compulsory for doctoral training. Candidates are responsible for designing and completing their own preparatory training.

The programme provides students with the possibility to acquire skills and competence required to conduct independent experimental research on human disease. It strongly encourages insertion of MD-PhDs into the clinics and their subsequent pursuit of basic, clinical or translational research within the field of their clinical interest and in harmony with their clinical responsibilities.

Thus, the MD-PhD programme encourages translational research.
