Research

Beyond biomarkers and towards mechanisms

The Metabolomics team has its own research and development goals

  • to design, develop and implement new approaches and methodologies for qualitative and quantitative analyses of polar and lipid metabolites including:
    • multiple pathway targeted approach for highly sensitive and specific measurement of a wide range of known polar and lipid metabolites involved in energy metabolism and metabolic siganling
    • deep annotation of model organism metabolome (along with lipidome)
    • stable isotope-assisted tracing experiments to track the fate of labeled substrates (i.e. nutrients) in different conditions (e.g., different genotypes, treatments, etc.)
    • tissue and cell imaging to acquire the information on spatial distribution of metabolites of interest
  • to define the framework of human metabolism by applying the validated leading-edge methodologies to human population (epidemiological) and clinical intervention studies to enhance the understanding of metabolic alterations with reproductive ageing (e.g., sex differences)

We actively collaborate with local research teams:

  • towards better understanding of metabolite role and activity in the etiology of complex metabolic diseases such as cancer, cardiometabolic (obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases) and neurological disorders

  • towards multi-scale 'omic data integration and systems biology approach
