Study of brain development with in-vivo MR Imaging of the Fetal Brain

In-vivo fetal magnetic resonance (MR) imaging provides a unique approach for the study of early human brain development. In uterocerebral morphometry can potentially be used as a marker of the cerebral maturation and help to distinguish between normal and abnormal development in ambiguous situation. We are mainly interested in the third semester of gestation, where the process of cortical folding (gyrogenesis) starts. The main focus of this research project is to precisely delineate basal ganglia, cerebellum, ventricles, cortex and white matter in 3D MR images of the fetal brain. Computer assisted tools will be provided and the candidate will be trained to be familiar with such viewers. Ultimately, quantitative comparisons of the volume of the different cerebral structures will be performed between a group of fetuses with normal brain development and a group of patients with cerebral pathology (currently, a database of 22 fetal images is available).

Objective: We require the students to become experimented in exploring 3D MR images of the brain with computer aided tools.

Supervision: This project is done at the Medical Image Analysis Laboratory of the Radiology Department of the CHUV, under the supervision of Meritxell Bach Cuadra, PhD, MER, and in collaboration with Marie Schaer, MD, PhD (Office Médico-Pédagogique Research Unit, Department of Psychiatry, HUG, Geneva).

Study of novel magnetic resonance sequences for brain segmentation in early degenerative brain diseases

Level: Master project at EPFL / University of Bern

Candidate: Sebastien Gelin

In this project, the student will investigate different strategies (with and without atlas information, with and without other spatial priors like Markov Random Field) on novel MRI sequences for segmentation of MR imaging of both control subjects and MCI patients. Secondly, statistical analysis will be derived from these segmented volumes and will be compared with traditional MR segmentation results. The student will evaluate the accuracy of standard segmentation tools for the new imaging sequences in comparison with traditional results. Focus will be paid into areas of interest in such degenerative brain disease (orbitofrontal cortex, amygdala, hippocampus, cingulate anterior, insula). The ultimate goal of this project is to provide a first study on the capabilities of new MR imaging sequences for better segmenting brain tissues.

Requirements: Image processing knowledge, Familiarity with Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Programming (Matlab, C++)

Supervision: This project is done at the Medical Image Analysis Laboratory of the Radiology Department of the CHUV, under the supervision of Meritxell Bach Cuadra, PhD, MER, and in collaboration with Dr. Alexis Roche and Dr. Gunnar Krueger from Advanced Clinical Imaging Technology, Siemens Healthcare Sector IM&WS S, Lausanne, Switzerland.
