Understanding microbial metabolism from a genomic perspective (van der Meer, McKinney)
The central idea of this course is the understand bacterial metabolic diversity from a genomic perspective. A very large number of bacterial genomes have been sequenced, which presents a wealth of material to study the blueprints of bacterial carbon and energy metabolism. We will concentrate on an in-depth study of the energy and carbon metabolism of a small number of bacteria, including anaerobic phototrophy, electricity production and pathogenic Mycobacteria, while learning methods to interpret genomic information.
Host pathogen interactions (responsible: Telenti)
This course will concentrate on the different aspects of microbial pathogenicity and host factors. We will examine a number of pathogenicity and virulence mechanisms, mammalian and plant host-specific factors in infection, regulatory and signalling processes in infection, and genomic aspects of pathogenicity.
7th semester - chapitres choisis
Chapitres Choisis for Microbiology
In the Chapitres Choisis for Microbiology we will present, examine and discuss a wide range of current topics in general microbiology, virology, infectious biology and environmental microbiology. Topics will closely follow the most up-to-date literature and research in the different Lausanne groups, and may vary from year to year.
Current topics include:
-Molecular basis of bacterial virulence (Greub)
-Fundamental aspects of pathogenic yeasts and fungi (Sanglard)
-The Power of bacterial genetics (Haas)
-Molecular basis of viral pathogenesis (Telenti)
-Small RNAs and global regulatory control in bacteria (Reimmann)
-Gene reporters in microbiology (van der Meer)
8th semester - chapitres choisis microbiology
8th semester, Chapitres Choisis
- Interactions between prokaryotes and eukaryotes: genetic regulation and signals (IPE), Christoph Keel and Dieter Haas.
- Microorganisms as tools in experimental biology (MBE), Dominique Sanglard
- Cellular and systematic pathogenesis (PCS), Dominique Sanglard
- Antimicrobial agents and prevention of infectious diseases (APM), Amalio Telenti
- Epidemiology (EPI), Dominique Blanc
