Workshop

Creating the post-doc's job-hunt package: finding opportunities outside the university and building applications

Introduction

This workshop reviews the current employment situation and helps participants prepare for a non-academic career path, whether in the private or public sector.

The workshop is organized over two days, with a two-week interval during which participants will develop their job-search portfolio. The workshop will include:

  • How to identify the parameters of their job-search: their skills and interests, goals and methods
  • How to identify potential employers and possible employment opportunities, reviewing job ads, networking, online resources
  • Creating the elements of a CV and of a cover letter: content, style, structure and purpose
  • Preparing for the interview.

On the first day, participants will gain an understanding of how to approach the job market (where doctorate holders work, the paths they take in their careers, the interaction with employers), and how to build the elements of their application. In the interval period, participants prepare for the second day by creating the first draft of their job-hunting strategy: identifying job-finding opportunities relevant to their own situation, writing a CV based on the first day's work, and the template for their own cover letter. In advance of the second day's activities, they will send their CV and cover letter to the trainer. On the second day of the workshop, participants will review their job-seeking strategy together, and receive personalized feedback on their CV and cover letter.

Target population
Post-docs who have decided to leave the university environment.

Trainer
Dr Verity Elston: Head of the CUSO programme in transferable skills. She has broad professional experience in the private and public sectors in several countries, and conducts ongoing research on careers for doctorate holders in Switzerland and in Europe.
