Appartement = Flats
Almost all available flats are managed by house-letting agents, so you should start your search by contacting them. We must draw your attention to the fact that you may be asked to deposit up to 3 months rent in advance as a guarantee.
Flats cannot be rented for 6 months or less; letting leases are usually for a minimum of one year.
As there is an acute shortage of flats to rent in the Lausanne region, agents tend to give families the priority when letting "big" flats.
People living abroad who try to rent a flat will face the added difficulty of finding a guarantor who already lives in Switzerland.
Studios = Studios
The situation regarding studios is very similar to that described above for flats. However, there does exist a wider choice of privately owned studios, which can simplify the procedure. Although it is difficult to rent a studio for less than one year, a 6-month lease is occasionally possible.
Chambre dépendante = Rooms
These are study-bedrooms, usually furnished, in a privately owned house or flat. The house-holder may ask for 1 or 2 months rent in advance as a guarantee. On average rooms cost SFrs. 550.- to 650.- maximum per month.
Chambre indépendante = Independent rooms
These are study-bedrooms, usually furnished, in a privately owned house or flat, but with their own separate entrance. The house-holder may ask for 1 or 2 months rent in advance as a guarantee.
Appartement à partager = Flat-sharing
A student rents a room in a flat shared with other student tenants. Bathroom and kitchen facilities, and service charges are shared among the tenants. The landlord/landlady may ask for 1 or 2 months rent in advance as a guarantee.
If you are planning to stay in Lausanne for a limited time, less than 1 year, for example, we strongly advise you to rent a room or share a flat.
