Foreign student from a country OUTSIDE the EU (permit B or L)
Exemption from compulsory health and accident insurance for B Permit or L Permit foreign students from outside the European Union
According to the enacted federal law on health insurance (LAMal) students holding a B or L permit may be exempted from contracting a compulsory health insurance in the Canton de Vaud provided that they can produce an attestation from a foreign health insurance company stating that they have basic coverage identical to that which is compulsory in Switzerland.
To obtain exemption, a student must make a formal request and complete a form called Attestation de l'assureur étranger (Attestation from a foreign insurer) which must be signed by the foreign health insurance company. This form can be obtained from

Foreign students who are unable in their own country to take out an insurance policy recognised in Switzerland have the possibility of taking out sickness-accident and international assistance insurance. Several companies offer approved products.
