Terms of Use of the Services

1. General

1.1. Access to the services

Scientific services of CIG (SSC) provide support to internal researchers only.

1.2. Fee-for-service policy

In principle, invoicing covers running costs except manpower.

For any experiment using expensive consumable, the SSC facility submits a quotation to the user for approval. Users commit to pay the invoice irrespective of the outcome of the experiment and acknowledge that the final price may vary slightly according to difficulties encountered and with the evolution of the service / project.

1.3. Acknowledgements & Authorship

In addition to the fees, use of the respective SSC facilities is expected to be acknowledged in users' publications. A co-authorship may even be justified for service projects that are time-/ labor-intensive and/or that require substantial scientific input.

Users should contact the relevant facilities before starting a project in order to ensure that optimal experimental conditions are chosen.

3. Use of common resources

In order to ensure proper workflows and management of central resources at CIG, please follow the procedures here below.

3.1. Common stock of petri dishes for bacteria screens

In order to keep track of groups use of the service, users need to record the quantity of petri bags taken, on the log page located next to the stock of petri dishes.

3.2. Online booking of common equipment / rooms

Common equipment such as high speed centrifuges, ultracentrifuges, FACS and other pieces of equipment in common floor rooms and in SSC facilities must be booked online before use on the CIG booking page.

3.3. Repair of common equipment

The SSC coordinates the maintenance, repair and replacement of common CIG equipment. Eligibility criteria for common equipment are set by CIG central services and validated by the CIG direction.  

In case of equipment failure, always contact the equipment responsible. S·he will troubleshoot and, in case of characterized failure, will contact the Scientific Services of CIG (SSC) (cig_equipment@unil.ch). ONLY upon SSC's approval, can the equipment responsible call an external tech service. Never directly call the external tech service! Repair costs will be covered by CIG GEN only if this procedure was properly followed.

3.4. Move an equipment within CIG

The move of equipment within CIG is coordinated exclusively by the SSC staff (please contact cig_equipment@unil.ch before taking any action).

3.5. Borrow a tool from the workshop

Tools can be borrowed from the workshop for a limited amount of time, upon request to the workshop manager (please contact cig_equipment@unil.ch). Tools cannot be freely taken.

4. Access to restricted areas

4.1. Animal facilities and services related to animal experimentation

Access to animal facilities at the Genopode is granted only after users have received good practices trainings from:

  1. the core animal facility (please contact Mathieu.Piguet@unil.ch) and then if required,
  2. the mouse metabolic facility (MEF, please contact cig_metabolism@unil.ch).

Users requesting help for mouse studies must have an active authorization from the Canton which cover specifically the requested protocols. The staff will be unable to start any experiment beforehand.

4.2. Radiosafety, biosafety (C lab, P2 lab)

Access to C laboratories and P2 laboratories require an accreditation and a badge access, which will be delivered once users have completed a training with a certified expert. See radioactivity safety rules and procedures here.

5. Suggestions to SSC related to policies and procedures

Suggestions and requests for improvements of SSC policies and procedures should be addressed by users to their respective group leaders, who will relay them to the SSC. A request can be delegated, provided that the user sends a copy (Cc) of the request email to her/his PI.
