Tissue Lipid Content

Obesity and adipose tissue dysfunction are associated with the accumulation of lipids in non-adipose tissues. The so-called ectopic fat deposition in liver (hepatic steatosis) and muscle (intramyocellular lipids) often associates with insulin resistance.

Lipids are extracted by the Folch method. Parameters that can be measured include :

  • Triglycerides, Total cholesterol, Free fatty acids.
  • Optional: Cholesterol esters (with an additional purification step).
