Alia Mafli

Since childhood, I developed a keen interest in the biology of reptiles, particularly in turtles. During my Master thesis in the University of Lausanne, I had the opportunity to point out the link between melanin-based colouration traits and some specific and constant behaviours, called also "behavioural syndromes" in the eastern Hermann's tortoise. The results showed that darker adult males were both bolder and more agressive than lighter coloured ones. Indeed, in a lot of species studies on melanic coloration show that animals with darker coloration seem to be more aggressive, sexually active and resistant to stress. This study on turtles focused my interests for my PhD research on the different roles and the pleiotropic effects of the melanocortin system on behaviour but also on the genetic background regulating melanogenesis, particulary the genetical variation and structure of the POMC (pro-opiomelanocortin) gene among different species.
