Since the 1990s, many countries around the world have begun to use genetic tests to establish biological relatedness in family reunification cases. In this talk, Dr. Heinemann will report findings from a comparative study on the use of DNA testing for family reunification in Austria, Finland and Germany.
Based on interviews with representatives of NGOs and immigration authorities, lawyers, geneticists working in DNA laboratories and applicants for family reunification, the study shows that DNA testing represents a new technology of surveillance in the process of immigration which raises serious social, political, and ethical questions. Family is increasingly understood as a biological relation while social dimensions such as sympathy, love, and care, are devaluated. At the same time DNA analysis for family reunification establishes an environment of mistrust and suspicion against immigrants.

Dans ce séminaire, Mara Buchbinder présentera les résultats de ses recherches sur les enjeux sociaux de la politique de dépistage néonatal aux États-Unis.
