Abstract
After more than two decades, Cuba's urban and peri-urban (suburban) agriculture movement remains strong and has shown signs of positive growth. The Cuban food crisis of the 90´s has practically disappeared, yet citywide production and yields continue to grow. Moreover, the territory allocated to urban and periurban agriculture-in all its forms-has continued to steadily grow.
This presentation approaches the experience of urban food production in Cuba - particularly in Havana - from the perspective of a researcher on urban issues. Thus the angles of planning and urban design also influence it. It offers an update of the current situation of Urban and Periurban Agriculture in Havana - a inspiring space that could be considered a laboratory for urban sustainability - and along with on the role planning has been having in this context.
It also reflects on potential future evolution and the role planning might have in a dynamically changing urban reality.
At the end of the presentation the speaker will shortly present the book Second Nature Urban Agriculture, the long awaited sequel to Continuous Productive Urban Landscapes: Designing Urban Agriculture for Sustainable Cities to which is one of its contributors.
