Professor Despina Mavromati



Despina Mavromati teaches Sports Arbitration and Sports Contracts at the University of Lausanne. She has authored the The Code of the Court of Arbitration for Sport : Commentary, Cases and Materials (with M. Reeb, Wolters Kluwer, 2015) and has published extensively on international sports law and arbitration.

Prof. Mavromati holds a Ph.D. in European Law from the University of Fribourg (Switzerland), an LL.M. and an M.B.A. from the University of Saarbrücken (Germany) and a law degree from the Aristoteles University of Thessaloniki (Greece). She was a Visiting Scholar at the Fletcher School for Law & Diplomacy at Tufts University (USA) from 2015 to 2016.

Prof. Mavromati is a practising attorney in Lausanne and has experience as counsel, consultant and expert witness in many recent high-profile sports arbitrations and proceedings before the Swiss Federal Tribunal. She is a Member of the UEFA Appeals Body and sits as arbitrator of the Independent Tribunal of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) & the Doping Hearing Panel of the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF). She served as a Member of the Disciplinary Tribunal of the International Athletics Federation (IAAF) and is an Accredited Mediator (CEDR and Harvard) and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb). Previously, prof. Mavromati served as Managing Counsel at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for nine years, where she was responsible for the drafting of legal opinions, mediation proceedings, the scrutinizing of CAS awards and the appeals to the Swiss Federal Tribunal.
