Research interests

João’s research interests are centered on the understanding of brain function and anatomy, and the improvement of neuroimaging methodologies to better investigate these aspects, both on the side of data acquisition and analysis. His work primarily involves ultra-high field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), electroencephalography (EEG), and the combination of both, as well as other multimodal approaches.

Short bio
João P. F. Jorge was born in 1987 near Lisbon, Portugal. For his Bachelor and Master’s, he studied Biomedical Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico, of the University of Lisbon. During this time he developed a stronger interest in the field of medical imaging, which he further pursued in his Master thesis dedicated to functional MRI in humans at 7T.

Following the Master’s, João undertook a PhD in Biomedical Imaging within a doctoral program jointly hosted by Instituto Superior Técnico and École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, supervised by Prof. Patrícia Figueiredo, Prof. Rolf Gruetter and Dr. Wietske van der Zwaag. Combining expertise from both institutions, he tackled the challenging problem of combining EEG and functional MRI at 7T, for simultaneous acquisitions in humans. He graduated in April 2016.

Currently, João is a post-doctoral researcher at the MIAL led by Dr. Meritxell Bach Cuadra (funded by Swiss National Science Foundation project 205321-157040). His current research lines include 7T high-resolution MRI exploring improved contrasts for subcortical imaging, and correction of artifacts due to head motion during MRI.
