Winter School for young researchers taking place from January 29th – February 3rd  2023 in Valencia, Spain

This international Winter School is targeted at young researchers (PhD students and researchers, academics, practitioners within 5 years of PhD graduation) working on current actuarial science topics. This new edition aims to gather experts from different fields to answer the following question:

How can actuarial and risk management tools help in developing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs)?

While the UN SDGs are well-studied by economists, few actuaries are working on such topics. The Winter School aims to fill this gap by gathering actuarial academics from different fields on one side and practitioners working with the UN SDGs on the other. Indeed, as actuaries are experts in the management of risks, they have developed tools in various disciplines that could be useful for many of the 17 SDGs. Their tools and approaches need to be combined and adapted to this challenging field, forcing researchers to learn each other’s languages to answer current questions related to the protection of the poor and the development of a sustainable society.

Young researchers across disciplines, such as actuarial science, demography, insurance, mathematics, statistics, epidemiology, biology and economics are encouraged to participate, present and freely discuss among each other their most relevant questions in their specific fields. Invited experts from academia and practice will be available for feedback (particularly in relation to how the presented research can help in reaching the SDGs) and will provide opening and closing remarks.
