Biosketch
Joël Billieux is associate professor of clinical psychology, psychopathology, and psychological assessment at the university of Lausanne, and Research Unit Director of the Cognitive and Affective Regulation Lab (CARLA), Institute of Psychology (IP), University of Lausanne (UNIL). He is also associated researcher at Center for Excessive Gambling (Lausanne University Hospitals). In the past years, he has been professor at the University of Luxembourg (2017-2020)and the Université catholique de Louvain (2012-2017). He earned his PhD in Psychological Sciences and accomplished his postgraduate CBT training at the University of Geneva. His main area of research regards the psychological factors (cognitive, affective, motivational, interpersonal) involved in the etiology of addictive behaviors, with a particular focus on self-regulation-related processes. Another focus of his research is the conceptualization and diagnosis of behavioral addictions. More recently, He also conducted research focusing on the effect of emerging technologies on human behavior. Since 2014, he is an expert in a World Health Organization workgroup related to the public health implications of behavioral addictions associated with the excessive use of ICTs. Since 2017, he is board member of International Society for the Study of Behavioural Addictions (ISSBA). He has published more than 300 peer-reviewed papers, several book chapters, and three books. He is Associate Editor for the Journal of Behavioral Addictions and Section Editor for Current Addiction Reports. He is also editorial board member of several other scientific journals (e.g., International Gambling Studies, Addictive Behaviors, Addictive Behaviors Reports, Computers in Human Behaviors, SN Comprehensive Clinical Medicine). He received in 2017 an Award of the Young Researcher in Human and Social Sciences from the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie. He is recipient of the Web of Science Award of highly cited researcher (category: cross-field).
