The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 2019, commonly known as the “Nobel Prize in Economics”, has just been awarded to Abjijit Banerjee (MIT), Esther Duflo (MIT) and Michael Kremer (Harvard), three researchers who have contributed to the renewal of development economics by using randomised experiments. According to Professor Dominic Rohner and Professor Mathias Thoenig from HEC Lausanne (UNIL), the research carried out by these three exceptional winners has had a profound impact on their field of study and more generally, on social sciences research.

The economic cycle of fear: will panic fuel the next global recession?
Insights from research at HEC Lausanne-UNIL – An historic bull market at the tail of end, an ongoing trade war, a bond bubble and gloomy economic indicators are all signs of an imminent recession. In such a climate there is a widespread fear that may well contribute to triggering the economic crisis itself. The research conducted by Prof. Philippe Bacchetta and his co-author on the causes of the 2008 crisis is therefore very topical!

Recognised as one of the world’s leading research centres for economics, the Centre for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR) has just launched a research network dedicated to conflict prevention and peace policies. The head of the new centre of competence, Prof. Dominic Rohner, from HEC Lausanne (UNIL), manages a group of around 30 experts, whose task is to increase the visibility of research in this field among a wide audience.
