Master in Earth sciences

Since 2008, the ELSTE offers a Master of Science in Earth sciences of 120 credits ECTS. After a Bachelor's degree in geology from the University of Geneva, from the University of Lausanne or another university qualification deemed equivalent, a student can join one of the orientations of the ELSTE Master in geology.

From the start of the academic year 2013, the study plan of the Master in Earth sciences has been entirely restructured. This master now includes three orientations:

  • SERG - Sedimentary, Environmental, and Reservoir Geology
  • GATO - Geochemistry, Alpine Tectonics, Ore Desposits
  • RGEOL - Geological Risks

The program of these orientations is elaborated jointly by the Universities of Geneva and Lausanne and starts in the fall semester of each academic year for a period of 4 semesters.

This program of Master can be entirely completed in English.

Organisation of study

From the beginning of the Master, the student chooses one of the three proposed orientations.

The curriculum of each orientation includes:

  1. a part of four mandatory modules (24 credits ECTS),
  2. a part of four modules chosen from a predefined list (24 credits ECTS),
  3. a part of free choices (12 credits ECTS).
  4. a Master thesis of 60 credits ECTS. This Master thesis is a personal research under the supervision of an ELSTE teacher.
