Presentation and research summary

Anna Clot-Garrell is a PhD candidate in Sociology of Religion at the University Autònoma of Barcelona and member of the research group ISOR (Investigations in Sociology of Religion). Her research focuses on the study of multiple expressions of contemporary religious pluralism.

She holds a Master in Arts in Religious Studies at the Politics, Philosophy and Religion Department of the Lancaster University. Her Master thesis, awarded with the Ninian Smart prize, was an ethnographic research exploring the emergence of novel religious expressions in Catalonia through the study of contemporary yoga in Barcelona. In 2011, she started a PhD at the Sociology Department of the University Autònoma of Barcelona with a thesis about contemporary monasticism. Her project examines how a traditional and communal religious institution as a female Benedictine monastery transforms and relates to current plural religious scenario. Parallel to her doctoral research, she has been working in several ISOR’s research group projects on religious diversity in public institutions and spaces such as: GEDIVER-IN. The management of religious diversity in hospitals and prisons in Spain, Yoga practice in prison, Religious expressions in urban spaces and Protestantism in Barcelona.

Anna Clot-Garrell is member of the research network Religion & Public Institutions and the group on Anthropology of Religion GREMHER (Research Group in Mysticism and Religious Heterodoxies) at the University of Barcelona. Furthermore, during her doctoral research, she has realized stays in several research centres such as the Politics, Philosophy and Religious Department (Lancaster University), the Centre d'études ethniques des universités montréalaises (Université Montréal) and the Insitute for Social Sciences of Religions (University of Lausanne).
