The Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology (DPT) participates actively to the teaching of pharmacology in the Schools of Medicine, and Biology at the Faculty of Biology and Medicine.

The teaching of pharmacology and toxicology to the students of the School of Medicine is divided between the Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology (DPT) of the University of Lausanne for fundamental pharmacology, and the Division of Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology of the CHUV for clinical pharmacology courses.

The main objective   of this teaching is to transmit to the students  solid basis in fundamental and clinical pharmacology allowing a detailed comprehension and a critical analysis of the mechanisms through which drugs produce their pharmacological effects.  These mechanisms include the mechanisms of action of the drugs and toxics at the cellular and molecular levels, the way the drugs are absorbed, distributed, transformed into the body, and then eliminated.

Pharmacology constitutes typically a transversal discipline; the teaching of fundamental pharmacology through the DPT is given in the context of interdisciplinary modules in the second and the third Bachelor years and the first year of the Master in medicine.
