Stable isotope geochemistry is one of the most powerful methods to study not only the origin and composition of fluids and gases and their interaction with solid materials of the geosphere, but also to characterize the compositional and thermodynamic properties of the solid constituents of rocks and sediments.
The Stable Isotope Laboratory of IDYST (UNIL) has facilities to routinely analyse the H, C, N, O, and S isotope compositions of almost any gas, liquid or solid of planet Earth or beyond… Samples for analyses can be prepared in the laboratories prior to the gas source mass spectrometric analyses.

Finnigan Delta Plus XL
Thermo Finnigan Delta Plus XL for carrier gas GasBench analyses of carbonates (C- and O-isotope compositions), dissolved inorganic carbon and oxygen isotope analyses of waters, as well as on-line TC/EA for hydrogen and oxygen isotope analyses of solids (hydrous mineral, phosphates, sulphates, nitrates), liquids (waters).

Thermo Scientific Delta V for dual inlet and carrier gas analyses and on-line EA for bulk sulphur, carbon, and nitrogen isotope analyses in sediments, minerals and rocks, GC and GC-TC combustion for molecular-specific analyses of hydrogen, carbon, oxygen and nitrogen isotope analyses.
Finnigan MAT 253
Finnigan MAT 253 for normal dual inlet and carrier gas analyses and on-line CO2-laser fluorination line for single grain and whole rock analyses of silicates and oxides. This mass spectrometer is also used for H-isotope analyses of waters (H-Device) and any offline samples such as CO2 separated from fluid inclusions and/or H-isotope analyses of water from fluid inclusions.
Picarro L1102i (H20 - WS-CRDS)
WS-CRDS (Wavelength-Scanned Cavity Ring Down Spectroscopy system) – laser-based analyses that is very precise for the hydrogen and oxygen isotope analyses of only Small amounts of water.
Preparation room with a controlled level of particle contamination meeting the standard ISO 6 (class 1000). The lab is equipped with two extraction hoods and three laminar flow hoods for which the particle concentration level meets the standard ISO 4 (class 10). The clean lab is used for partial or complete dissolution of samples for which chemical and isotopic analyses through liquid phase mass spectrometry are planned.
