Description, aims and objectives

THE FACULTE OF ARTS, founded in 1837, is one of the largest schools at the University of Lausanne, with over 2,200 students of more than 80 different nationalities.

The Faculty offers a wide range of disciplines, from history to theoretical approaches in the humanities and the study of modern and ancient, national and international languages. Areas of study include currents of thought and the full range of cultural output, from literature and speeches in all their diversity to the traces of ancient civilisations, film, photography, music, cartoons, video games and more.

With 20 disciplines on offer in the Faculty (and therefore thousands of possible course combinations), studying the arts makes sense of the intellectual richness of the past as well as the social realities of today. The range of courses we provide is further enhanced by the disciplines offered by our partner Faculties at UNIL and other universities in French-speaking Switzerland.

The multi-disciplinary nature of the Faculty’s Bachelor’s and Master’s courses enable students to develop numerous skills, including the ability to analyse and summarise, critical thinking, rigorous interpretation, independence, organisation, arguing, strong written and oral communication, and the ability to convey complex knowledge.

Numerous joint ventures with the city and the world of the arts means your training in the field will prepare you for a range of career opportunities in fields such as culture (museums, theatres, festivals and foundations), publishing, media and communications, teaching, international organisations or events management.

IIt offers complete degree courses or “satellite” courses of French focusing on the French Language and French and more generally Francophone Culture. Every year, over 1000 students from more than 90 countries participate in the various courses at different levels.

If you want to improve your French, you can take Satellites courses at the School of French as a Foreign Language to complement other studies in one of UNIL's faculties.

Complete degree programmes provide extensive training in French as a Foreign Language (FFL) in its linguistic and cultural dimensions, as well as the theoretical knowledge of literature, linguistics and teaching methodologies necessary to achieve proficiency in this field.
