Parentage analysis

What is this about?

Parentage genetic analysis is the determination with DNA markers of maternity or paternity of an individual.

Why perform these analyses?

  • These analyses verify whether an individual is a legitimate progeny of already captive individuals (from a legal breeding facility), and has not illegally been caught from the wild. They provide authorities (law enforcement agencies, CITES, customs, ...) with the ability to investigate suspected poachers and smugglers, by investigating false parentage claims.

  • These analyses also allow the study of parentage relationships in natural populations (packs, nests, ...).
