PhD student position in Neuroscience
University of Lausanne, Switzerland
(Reference: position # 20678)
A PhD student position in Neuroscience is available in the group of Prof. Jean-Yves Chatton at the Department of Fundamental Neurosciences starting March/April 2023. We are interested in brain metabolism with our research projects centered on neuronal activity-glial cells coupling. We are currently investigating the impact of these interactions in neurodegenerative diseases and epilepsy. The project will focus on mitochondria in astrocytes and mitochondrial uncoupling; the successful candidate will work with novel optogenetic tools to achieve “on demand” control of mitochondrial activity in astrocytes to investigate astrocyte-neuron metabolic coupling and its contribution to aging, neurodegeneration, and epilepsy.
The successful candidate will work in an interdisciplinary environment. Experimental approaches will make extensive use of optogenetics coupled to electrophysiology and dynamic cellular imaging techniques (wide-field, one- and two-photon confocal fluorescence microscopy). Studies will be performed in primary cultured neural cells and in brain slices. The candidate will also be required to apply molecular biology approaches, stereotaxic viral vector injections and immunofluorescence. Projects will include the optimization of imaging and optogenetic tools.
Applicants should have a background in biology, biochemistry, or engineering, and have keen interest in imaging and biophysical approaches of biological research. Conditions and remuneration will be according to the regulations of the Swiss National Science Foundation for doctoral students.
