Complementary Examination of Swiss Higher Education Institutions (ECUS)

General information

In accordance with swissuniversities' Regulations for the Complementary Examination of Swiss Higher Education Institutions (ECUS), students who hold a recognized foreign diploma that is not deemed equivalent to a "maturité gymnasiale suisse" must pass the ECUS.

Students required to sit the ECUS cannot register with the University of Lausanne until they have passed this exam.

The diploma from the School of French as a Foreign Language (EFLE) does not grant exemption from passing the ECUS.

Succeeding in the ECUS does not exempt the candidates from fulfilling any other admission conditions.

This exam takes place in Geneva (CH) from 7 to 9 August 2024 (written exams) and from 12 to 15 August 2024 (oral exams).

Deadlines for candidates

Candidates required to sit the Complementary Examination of Swiss Higher Education Institutions (ECUS), must submit their completed application (including if required the certified copies) before 30 April 2024, 28 February for candidates needing a visa to study in Switzerland.

Enrolment form for the ECUS is provided by UNIL after the processing of the application. Candidate must imperatively complete and return the form to the Admissions Office before 1st June 2024 (date of receipt).

Exam content

Four mandatory subjects:

French (level C1), Mathematics, English and History (including introduction to Law).

One optional subject from among the following:

1. Physics
2. Chemistry
3. Biology
4. Geography (including introduction to Economics)

Note: for the following faculties/schools, the choice is restricted:

ESC: 1, 2 or 3;
School of Biology: 3;
School of Medicine: 1, 2 or 3;
Pharmacy: 2 or 3.
